The Centre has 50,000m² of laboratories and offices and 50,000m² of buildings for experimental livestock breeding (mainly cattle and sheep), facilities for small animals (rodents, etc.) and an operating block, sterile chambers for animals, a slaughterhouse, greenhouses and growing rooms for plants. 1200 hectares are available for field trials and experimental breeding.
The Centre also has state-of-the-art equipment, such as:
- technical platforms: genotyping (in French), proteomics, transcriptomics (in French), metabolism exploration platform, electronic microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, chromatography-olfaction… Some of these technical platforms have the RIO label.
- an Environmental Research Observatory (ORE): for the long-term observation of the grassland ecosystem. At INRA Clermont-Fd - Theix and Lusignan (Centre of Poitou-Charentes), an Environmental Research Observatory, certified by the Ministry of Research, aims at studying the influence of crops and pastures on grassland biodiversity (vegetation, microbes and fauna of the soil) and on the environment (water and air quality, soil condition).
The observatory is situated at Laqueuille (experimental Unit Les Monts Dore - Centre of Clermont-Fd - Theix) concerns permanent grasslands (pasture and mowing) of low mountain range. For further information: http://pcbb.ore.fr/ (in French).
- a platform of multidisciplinary research in organic agriculture:
based on a triple resource in suckling sheep husbandry: study of the breeding systems on the experimental INRA organic farm (zootechnical performances, fodder quality, economic results... ), the comparison of the quality of lambs produced according to the conventional or organic mode of production, the technical and economic study of organic farms compared with conventional farms, on the scale of the Massif Central.
